I Am Statement and Want to Become Statement
I am Roman Moreno, an intern at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, and a campaign intern for multiple campaigns surrounding Indianapolis. Most importantly, I am an Honors Student.
Currently studying government policy at Bose McKinney & Evans, I have become self-aware of my position as a student at IUPUI and even more empathic to my peers. I have demonstrated that I am very determined as a campaign intern working for two ambitious women looking to make a difference. I spent countless hours strategizing ways to reach out to many individuals in the area. This has allowed me to fulfill myself as a communicator in my neighborhood and become an innovator using technology to help inform voters in the surrounding areas.
I have had the ability to work with canvassing applications to understand the demographics, voting habits, and even transportation that people utilize to go and vote. Lastly, I have recently started as the Latino Outreach Ambassador at the School of Informatics. I have been self-driven in representing my people at IUPUI and my surroundings so that my identity as a Latino will not hold me back in college.
I had the chance to speak with many parents and prospective students and become a resource to them so that once they come to IUPUI, they have a familiar face to speak to. Yet even with all of these aspects, I am still continuing to learn many of the skills that I have and skills that I can continue to improve on to have the best chance to pursue my passion for law.
I Am Statement
“But most importantly, I am an Honor’s Student”
I want to become an honors student capable of many things beyond academics, socially, emotionally, and physically. As it stands, I feel that I have applied myself to academics, but I continue to prosper in where I am emotionally and socially in the world.
I want to become an individual through the help of my friends and family, a person I can look at in the mirror and say that’s exactly who I want to be. Academically, I want to become a force to be reckoned with. The competition that it takes to get into law school is very rigorous. Therefore, I need to apply myself to become the best version I can possibly be when it comes to using it. After I apply to law school, I hope I can get in. Whether the law school is in-state or out-of-state, I want to become a great law school student and apply myself in every classroom to prepare for the bar exam.
I want to become more active in my life. I have started to do so by going to the gym in the morning with my cousins. I hope this sets an excellent precedent for my future self in keeping up this routine and new lifestyle change.
After law school, I want to become an attorney for a few years, specializing in immigration. I have goals in mind that I would like to develop my practice into something more prominent beyond the courtroom and take it to local politics.
Being able to impact individuals on a personal level will finally help with my development in empathy and understanding of the world that we truly live in. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to do so, and I want to become an individual who can connect to people on any emotional/personal level they need. The world is too small to be bickering and an opposing force, so this would greatly benefit my capabilities in packaging my experience with the immigration system and others to speak volumes.
Overall my values throughout this process are fluid, and I love challenging myself currently in my beliefs and where to go from here. It is constantly changing, so throughout this time, I want to become a learner and a self-reflective person that looks beyond the status quo. I want to continue to become a community contributor in my area and help represent my community and people. There is a huge lack of diversity in the state legislature, with only two sitting Latinos in the state house. Therefore it has become my mission to understand why that exists and understand my privilege as I try to get there at my own pace.
I Want to Become Statement
Reflection
I remember the first time I stepped foot into the course, not knowing what to expect. Luckily, with the first assignment, I got a glimpse of what was to come. Reflection is a critical component of being an Honors Student at IUPUI, and I had the chance to do that throughout the course of the semester. In the first week of class, we had the opportunity to write about who we were in that moment in space and time. But I didn’t know that there was a part two to the assignment later that would try its best for us to cater our understanding beyond the walls of IUPUI. Overall, the assignment worked very well in helping me develop my sense of belonging at IUPUI while acknowledging my professional, academic, and personal goals. I am always learning and willing to challenge my beliefs, so to revisit this assignment now and see exactly how I have grown into an honors student at IUPUI is incredible and exciting.
